The hardest part of gifting a jersey is not the team. It is the size, the version, and whether the recipient actually wears jerseys.

Ask three questions

  • Which team and which era?
  • Do they wear fitted clothing or oversized?
  • Will they display it or wear it?

Budget tiers

Under $60: a cap or a youth jersey. $80–$120: a Swingman. $150+: an Authentic or a Mitchell & Ness throwback. The jump from Swingman to Authentic is the biggest quality jump per dollar.

Safe picks

A current star on a team the recipient already follows is safer than a retired legend. If you are unsure, choose the team’s primary home color — it is the most recognizable and the easiest to style.

Size without asking

If you cannot ask, choose the larger size. A slightly oversized jersey is wearable; a tight one is not. For youth, go by height rather than age.
